s k e l e t o n: CAMILLA NEWHAGEN
s k e l e t o n : solo exhibitions in the PLAySPACE closet
March 15 – April 20, 2012
Camilla Newhagen is an MFA candidate at Mills College whose work considers the formation of identity. For this investigation, the artist solicits material belongings from friends – clothes, shoes, accessories, exercise equipment – that are then folded and stacked. The sculptures, held in place by planks of wood, create portraits that do no rely on or prioritize the human form. Newhagen’s work reminds us that at the end of the day, the items we accumulate, which shape our identities and our individuality, end up on the floor or in a laundry basket.
Skeleton is an exhibition program for PLAySPACE, which offers one artist from a Bay Area MFA program a solo exhibition in the PLAySPACE storage closet. Chosen for their ability to counter certain constraints, artists respond via installation in the space of a closet.
